Developing Wind & Hydrogen in Newfoundland
I joined Minister Hutchings, MP Joanne Thompson, and representatives from World Energy GH2, including CEO Sean Leet and Indigenous leaders Chief Mi’sel Joe and Qalipu Chief Jenny Brake, to announce big news for our Province.
The federal government is giving a $128 million credit facility to World Energy GH2. This is a federal loan guarantee that will help develop Canada’s first commercial-scale green hydrogen and ammonia facility in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Project Nujio’qonik on the west coast of Newfoundland and Labrador will create 1,100 jobs in construction, 100 jobs to operate the facility, and we’re projecting another 1,300 indirect jobs. It will see several wind farms - one in Port au Port, one in the Codroy valley - produce over 3 Gigawatts of clean power to deliver approximately 250,000 tons of hydrogen a year.
The world is looking for renewable energy. For wind. For hydrogen. That's where the money’s going. We’re making sure it’s Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who are exporting it to the world and taking home the profits.
